GOLD New Issue: Guardians of the Digital World

In the new issue of GOLD, coming out on Sunday, 21 December, we examine how cybersecurity has become a national challenge and a core business necessity (click here).

In recent years, Cyprus, a relatively young player in the digitalisation game, has become a tempting target for a motley collection of hacker groups, each driven by its own motives. The EU’s rapid technological transformation, coupled with geopolitical instability and economic security concerns, has prompted Brussels to accelerate its cyber agenda. Key priorities emphasise resilience, technological sovereignty and swift implementation of directives such as NIS2 and the Cyber Resilience Act. Meanwhile, the EU Digital Europe Programme has allocated €390 million between 2025 and 2027 for strategic investments in cybersecurity. Cyprus’ recent breaches illustrate the stakes: a motivated actor could shut down the electricity grid and trigger a country-wide blackout, hold hospitals ransom or even tamper with electoral results. The question is not if, but when.

Yet strategic adoption lags. Across both the public and private sectors, awareness of cyber threats has not translated into robust protection. Supply chain vulnerabilities add another layer of complexity. In today’s interconnected world, dependencies on third-party providers, each with its own security practices, introduce risks that are often underestimated yet they are increasingly prominent. Then there is the new era of AI, tilting the balance in the hackers’ favour. In this cover story, seven cybersecurity firms operating in Cyprus outline where the private sector is most exposed, how to defend against threats and the trends likely to shape the space. Meanwhile, George Michaelides, Commissioner of Communications, assesses the risks facing the island if its critical systems remain vulnerable and sets out the strategic objectives needed to defend Cyprus against the growing wave of cyberattacks.
