Maria Kouroupi: The €170m airport development projects are on schedule

Development projects at Larnaca and Paphos airports are progressing normally and within the set timetables , with the managing company, Hermes Airports, taking all necessary measures to ensure that their operations are not affected.

It is recalled that the foundation stone for the second phase of the development of Cyprus airports was laid on 5 June, and since then the projects with a total budget of 170 million euros, an amount financed entirely by Hermes Airports, have been in full swing.

It is noted that the new phase of airport development includes extensive upgrades, in particular:

  • New wing at the Larnaca terminal, connected to the main building
  • New gates, additional baggage belts, new passport control and security screening area, expansion of the shopping area
  • Increase in aircraft parking spaces
  • In Paphos, terminal capacity increase by 30% and expansion of the southern parallel taxiway

Upon completion, the total passenger capacity will reach 17.4 million passengers per year.

How are the projects progressing?

In a statement to InBusinessNews, the Director of Aviation Development, Marketing and Communication of Hermes Airports, Maria Kouroupi, when asked about this, stated that "the projects have started for both airports since the end of March and for Larnaca their completion is expected within 30 months, while in Paphos they will last 27 months."

As she said, the projects are currently progressing according to the schedule that has been set, while emphasis is being placed on improving infrastructure in conjunction with enhancing services to passengers.

"The projects will enhance the capacity of our airports, ensuring that they can effectively meet future needs," she added.

Priority is uninterrupted operation

Asked whether any issues have arisen with the operation of the airports due to the projects, Kouroupi stressed that "when starting the projects, we knew that our main challenge and at the same time priority is to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the airports throughout the duration of the works."

This, she indicated, is a huge project with an important peculiarity: all work will be carried out in the live and fully operational environment of the airports, which during their execution, will not stop operating for even a second.

"Obviously, depending on the progress of the projects, we are diversifying functions or moving useful services," she added, noting that "we place particular importance on regularly and promptly informing passengers about any change or regulation regarding procedures, in order to minimise any inconvenience, especially during periods of increased traffic."

"Good planning and effective preparation are what allow us to overcome any obstacles that arise so that we can continue to provide the high level of hospitality and professionalism that our guests and travelers deserve," concluded the Director of Aviation Development, Marketing and Communication of Hermes Airports.
