Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, has referred to the willingness of Cyprus and Moldova to further strengthen their bilateral cooperation, announcing an official visit by the President of Moldova to Cyprus.
Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Palace after the Cabinet meeting on 10 December, the Spokesperson said that on Friday, 12 December, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, will pay an official visit to Cyprus, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.
"This is the first visit by a Moldovan President to Cyprus in 22 years, which demonstrates the willingness of the two countries to upgrade our bilateral relations and cooperation and follows multiple meetings between the Presidents of the two countries at international conferences over the last two and a half years," he added.
He added that Nicosia will welcome the distinguished guest "with a clear political intention to strengthen the bilateral framework of cooperation in important areas such as justice, education, and transportation, through the completion of pending agreements that will create new momentum and real benefits for citizens."
He added that, at the same time, the Republic of Cyprus will reaffirm "its unwavering support for the European path of Moldova, a candidate for accession, recognising the significant reform progress that has been achieved and the country's commitment to the fundamental principles of the Union, despite adverse conditions and amid hybrid threats and misinformation."
"In the context of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, the political dimension of enlargement will be a priority of high strategic importance, based on meritocracy and full alignment with the acquis communautaire, because the progress and integration of candidate countries, including Moldova, is an investment in the security, democracy, and strength of the EU," he noted.
He also said that, at the same time, Nicosia appreciates Moldova's principled position on the Cyprus issue and welcomes the country's recent alignment with the European Union's restrictive measures against Turkey, confirming the common commitment to international law and the territorial integrity of all states.
"Similarly, we consistently support Moldova's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence, and we support every effort that strengthens the country's resilience and stability," he added.
"The visit confirms that Cyprus and Moldova share a common vision for a peaceful and secure future. At a time of successive regional and international challenges, the two countries are demonstrating that through solidarity, mutual respect, and a European perspective, alliances with depth, substance, and clear geopolitical value for the entire European family can be built, a priority that we will place at the center of the Cyprus Presidency," Letymbiotis concluded.
