Bird Aviation gets Environment Department green light for new aircraft maintenance building

Bird Aviation is proceeding with the construction of a new aircraft maintenance hangar after securing approval from the Department of the Environment.

It is recalled that Bird Aviation recently inaugurated its second aircraft maintenance and repair hangar, which is located at the site of the old Larnaca airport.

The project, which received the green light from the Department of the Environment, will consist of two buildings with an area of 5132.3 and 2867.4 sq.m. respectively and an EAC substation with an area of 60.2 sq m.

The proposed development sites are located within the Larnaca Airport Zone. Development will be limited to the portion of the sites that fall within the Larnaka Airport Special Zone.

According to the environmental report, the project's operation focuses on the maintenance of airplanes/aircraft. The small hangar is expected to be constructed within 2025 with the capacity to service one small type of aircraft (narrow body), while the large one within 2026 with the capacity to service one large type of aircraft (wide body) or two small type of aircraft. The two hangars, in addition to the basic aircraft maintenance area, will include office space for employees, sanitary areas, kitchens and a warehouse.

Among other things, it is emphasised that part of the area proposed for development consists of low vegetation with shrubs where cleaning by mechanical means is necessary to remove loose soil - materials to a depth of 20cm, while the surface soil to be removed will not be utilised due to its friability and will be delivered to a licensed unit for management.

It is noted that a few metres southeast of the proposed project, there is a building of a similar nature, while at a distance of approximately 600 meters there are other facilities of the old and new airport.
