Neil Barrett on how the TUI Group has embraced the 'Ask for Angela' traveller safety campaign in Cyprus

TUI Group's approach to enhancing security in the tourism sector was analysed in a presentation by Neil Barrett, the Group's Senior Global Business Intelligence Manager at the 'Safeguarding Cyprus's Tourism Industry' event in Limassol.

He referred to the key risk areas that may affect customers and stressed the importance of early identification and response to such situations.

The central element of the presentation was the 'Ask for Angela' programme, which was first introduced in Cyprus in May, leveraging collaboration with the British High Commission and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism. The programme aims to offer safe solutions to incidents that may threaten the well-being of visitors, through discreet and easily applicable procedures.

The scheme works by training staff in vulnerability management and what to do when someone Asks for Angela.

The trained member of staff will understand the person asking is in need of help and support and will be able to respond in an appropriate, discreet way. They might call security, lead the person to a safe space, or help them leave the premises unnoticed.

Barrett also referred to the response from hoteliers who participated in the pilot programme in Cyprus, emphasising that the initiative improved staff readiness and enhanced the overall guest experience.

TUI, he underlined in conclusion, places particular emphasis on prevention and the creation of a safe environment, with the aim of establishing itself as a risk management model in the tourism sector.

'Safeguarding Cyprus's Tourism Industry' was held under the auspices of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism and organised by the British High Commission.
