Interior Minister, Constantinos Ioannou, will participate in the ministerial meeting on affordable housing and Sustainability organised in Geneva on 8 October, within the framework of the 86th Session of the Committee on Housing, Urban Development and Land Management of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
The Ministry of Interior and the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 said in a press release on Tuesday that the Ministerial Meeting will be held at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN), with the participation of the Director-General of UNECE and Ministers and high-ranking officials of the Member States of the European region of the Organisation.
The challenges and strategic priorities for the affordability and sustainability of housing will be the focus of the meeting.
Ministers will have the opportunity to present the policies and strategic actions implemented at national level with the aim of ensuring citizens’ access to affordable and sustainable housing options. In addition, participants will be invited to agree on Commitments for the implementation of actions that ensure affordable and sustainable housing options.
During his intervention at the meeting, Ioannou will present the pillars and measures implemented by the Republic of Cyprus within the framework of its integrated housing policy, which focus on increasing the supply of affordable housing and enhancing citizens’ access to affordable housing options. He will also refer to the need to encourage the development of synergies between the public sector, local authorities and the private sector, to promote the most effective solutions to address the major housing challenge, the press release added.
On the sidelines of his participation in the Ministerial Meeting, the Minister will have separate meetings with the Director-General of UNECE, Tatiana Molcean, and with the Minister of Social Solidarity of Slovenia, Simon Maljevac. The meetings will discuss, among other things, the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the first half of 2026 on housing, as well as the objectives promoted at EU level through the European Affordable Housing Plan under development, the press release concluded.
