Agriculture Minister says incentives need to make the primary sector more attractive to young people

The government's determination to support farmers, ensuring that promises are turned into actions, has been reiterated by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou, in her statements during the second day of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels.

"We are here to support our farmers—both men and women. Every time we say this, we want our words and deeds to align," the Minister stated on 23 September. She emphasised that it was this alignment that led EU Agriculture Ministers in December 2024 to adopt joint Council conclusions and later sign the "Letter of the 20", advocating for an independent two-pillar Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

However, the European Commission’s new proposal does not include this independent two-pillar structure. Instead, it introduces a 'New Approach', marking the beginning of a challenging process that must ultimately deliver a positive outcome for farmers, as she said.

"As farmers work tirelessly to provide what we have on our tables every day, we must provide them with a supportive framework—one that offers sufficient incentives, financial tools, and makes the primary sector attractive to young people," Panayiotou stressed. She reiterated Cyprus’ unwavering commitment to the future of agriculture and the primary sector, calling it not just a promise, but a priority and a firm stance.
