President Christodoulides and Amazon executive discuss cooperation on Cyprus' digital transformation

President Nikos Christodoulides and David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President, Chief Global Affairs & Legal Officer of Amazon have discussed ways to increase opportunities for cooperation on the digital transformation of Cyprus, during a meeting in New York, according to a written statement by the Government Spokesperson.

Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that the 22 September meeting follows productive contacts that had previously taken place with Panos Panay, Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, last April in San Francisco, as well as with Amazon AWS and Amazon Kuiper, with the latter scheduled to visit Cyprus in the coming weeks.

In his statement, Letymbiotis notes that Cyprus, also leveraging its geographical location, is "rapidly emerging as a regional hub of innovation, particularly in areas such as fintech, regtech, and gametech, hosting more than 1,600 international companies, including 47 multinationals." The startup ecosystem has quintupled since 2020, with many operating internationally, while the Information and Communication Technology sector has recorded annual growth of over 17% since 2014, contributing nearly 14% to GDP, he adds.

These achievements, Letymbiotis says, combined with Cyprus’s strategic investments in data centers, cloud, and artificial intelligence, make the country an attractive destination for international technology companies and create the conditions for substantive collaborations, to the benefit of both the state and its citizens, as well as for the further strengthening of Amazon’s presence in the region.
