Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou says the government is doing damage control as regards the unfinished Vassiliko LNG terminal project.
"The current government is doing damage control at the moment regarding the project," he said in response to a question from CNA on 23 August regarding a report by OMEGA TV late on 22 August that serious technical problems have been identified in the project by the project coordinator.
It is noted that a technical consultant who was appointed is preparing a report on the Vassiliko terminal, which will be completed soon.
Papanastasiou stressed that any responsibilities surrounding the design and decisions on technical matters regarding the project should be attributed. “They may raise safety issues during the operation of the entire project,” he noted.
He added that they are waiting for the report of the technical consultant who will submit it to the Natural Gas Infrastructure Company, ETYFA.
Immediately afterwards, ETYFA will submit it to the Ministry and the Ministry will decide on the next steps.
Regarding the FRSU 'Prometheus' he said that it is currently in Malaysia and is undergoing the necessary modifications so as to install systems in order to be considered a floating gasification unit.
At the moment, Papanastasiou added, a terminal is being sought to conduct tests on the performance of the floating gasification unit.
"Prometheus is in Malaysia and is undergoing the changes needed to install the missing systems in order to be considered a floating gasification unit and is expected in October. A terminal is currently being sought to conduct tests on the performance of the floating gasification unit," the Minister told CNA.
