Cyprus ranks second in the EU for employees who work more than 49 hours per week

Cyprus had the second-highest proportion in the EU of employees working more than 49 hours a week in their main job in 2024, according to Eurostat, with the proportion standing at 10% of workers aged 20-64, and behind only Greece with 12.4%.

According to Eurostat, in 2024, 6.6% of workers aged 20-64 in the EU worked 49 or more hours a week in their main job. The percentage decreased compared to 2014, when it was 9.8%, and 2019, when it was 8.4%.

Of the EU member states, Greece had the highest percentage of employees working over 49 hours with 12.4%, followed by Cyprus with 10% and France with 9.9%.

In contrast, the lowest percentage was recorded in Bulgaria (0.4%), Latvia (1%) and Lithuania (1.4%).

The percentage of self-employed people who worked long hours was 27.5%, significantly higher than the percentage of employees, which was 3.4%.

The occupations in which employees with long hours were most frequently recorded were skilled agricultural, forestry and fishing workers (26.2% of employees in this sector) and managers (21.1%).
