Trade deficit up in the first half of this year

Cyprus' trade deficit stood at €3,871.4 million in the first half of this year, up by €223.1 million compared to the same period of last year, provisional data for June released by CySTAT, show.

More specifically, according to provisional data, total imports of goods in June 2025 recorded an increase of 21.1%, reaching €1,114.7m compared to €920.3m in June 2024.

As noted, imports from other EU Member States were €588.0m and from third countries €526.7m, compared to €554.3m and €366.0m respectively in June 2024.

Imports in June 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with a total value of €50.6m compared to €77.8m in June 2024.

On the other hand, total exports of goods in June 2025 were €506.5m as compared to €452.5m in June 2024, recording an increase of 11.9%.

Furthermore, exports to other EU Member States were €141.5m and to third countries €365.0m, compared to €127.8m and €324.7m respectively in June 2024.

It is noted that exports in June 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of €63.3m as compared to €160.6m in June 2024.

According to CySTAT, total imports of goods in January-June 2025 amounted to €6,495.6m compared to €5,645.9m in January-June 2024, recording an increase of 15.0%.

Total exports of goods in January-June 2025 were €2,624.2m compared to €1,997.6m in January-June 2024, registering an increase of 31.4%.

The trade deficit was €3,871.4m in January-June 2025 compared to €3,648.3m in the corresponding period of 2024, the statement concludes.
